DH Lawrence and Love of Citrus Fruits

From DH Lawrence:
"I got the blues thinking of the future, so I left off and made some marmalade. It's amazing how it cheers one up to shred oranges and scrub the floor."

This is actually not about citrus fruits and scrubbing the floor. This would be described as a comment on the difference between depression and depressiveness. One being a psychological state and the other being more related to the over telegraphing to others of the existence of that psychological state.

In DH Lawrence's life he recognized that prompt and immediate action was the cure for depression. Make marmalade rather than contemplate the woeful state of one's situation in life. However, if in the act of making marmalade one spills some sweet citrus fruit it is the necessity for immediate action that prompts one to focus on the sharp knife blade and the need to avoid ant infestations. Action. Not contemplation.

I've often given this advice to people and explained to them that the first thing to tackle is depressiveness. If a young woman does not look quite "together" then that is the first focus. A more stylish outfit, perfume, make-up! That is the key!

Waiting to be inspired to tackle a boring task is futile. No one is ever inspired to mop the floor! If you want to be inspired to clean simply invite your friends over for Poker Night. You know your lady friends will only show up if the bathroom is spotless so the Poker Night invitation is your motivation to clean house!
